Durban Poison Feminised

Lineage: South African Sativa

Durban Poison Feminised is a genuine pure sativa landrace, untouched by modern hybrid breeding. It’s grown wild in South Africa for centuries before reaching Western growers in the 1970s. That heritage still shows in the effect today. Expect a clear-headed, energising high, rather than anything hazy or heavy.

What Is Durban Poison Feminised?

Durban Poison Feminised carries a genuinely rare pedigree. Unlike most modern strains, it isn’t a cross of anything. It’s a true landrace, grown naturally in the hills around Durban, South Africa, for generations before anyone bred it deliberately. In the 1970s, American cannabis writer Ed Rosenthal encountered the strain on a trip to South Africa. He brought seeds back and shared them with growers in the US and the Netherlands. That’s how this genuinely wild genetic line reached the wider world.

Breeders bred these seeds to produce almost exclusively female plants. So every seed gives you a genuine shot at that same pure landrace genetics. As a result, you skip the guesswork of a regular pack entirely. If you’re new to judging bud quality by more than reputation, our guide to spotting quality weed is a useful companion read.

What sets Durban Poison apart, though, isn’t just the history. It’s the clarity. This strain delivers a sharp, energising head high, rather than anything foggy or overwhelming. Because of that, it’s remained a genuine daytime favourite, decades after it first left South Africa.

Origins & Genetics of Durban Poison

Durban Poison’s origin story is refreshingly straightforward compared to most strains on this site. There’s no disputed cross here, because there’s no cross at all. It’s a pure sativa landrace, native to the region around Durban on South Africa’s east coast. It evolved naturally over centuries, rather than through selective breeding.

That changed in the 1970s. Ed Rosenthal, then travelling through South Africa, came across the strain and recognised how distinctive it was. He carried seeds back to the US and shared them further with breeders in the Netherlands. From there, growers preserved the line largely intact, rather than crossing it into something new. If you’re drawn to a similarly energising strain built from genuinely old genetic stock, AK-47 Feminised is worth comparing alongside this page.

It’s a true landrace. So Durban Poison carries none of the hybrid vigour or genetic variation you’d expect from a modern cross. Breeders have consistently prioritised keeping it close to its wild form, rather than reshaping it for a different effect.

Durban Poison Effects, Aroma & Flavour

Users commonly describe Durban Poison Feminised as sharply energising and genuinely clear-headed. Expect a fast, uplifting onset that builds focus rather than fogging it. Because the high runs this clean, many treat this strain as a firmly daytime or morning choice. Creativity and motivation are also commonly reported alongside the mental lift. As always, individual response depends on tolerance and dose, so treat this as a commonly reported experience rather than a guarantee.

The aroma leans sweet and spicy, with real complexity to it. Anise and liquorice notes sit up front, backed by pine and citrus. It’s a scent that’s instantly distinctive next to more typical, fuel-forward sativas.

On the inhale, sweet herbal notes lead the way. A minty, liquorice-like aftertaste follows on the exhale, rounding out the flavour profile nicely. Reviewers consistently rank this among the more recognisable flavour profiles in the pure sativa space.

That profile lines up with the terpenes most commonly reported in Durban Poison: terpinolene, myrcene and pinene. Smaller amounts of caryophyllene and ocimene round it out. Exact percentages vary by phenotype. Even so, growers most often associate this strain with a sweet, spicy terpene character. That’s a clear step away from the earthy, hash-heavy profile typical of Kush-family strains.

Growing Durban Poison Seeds

Most sources rate Durban Poison Feminised as easy to moderate. It’s a genuinely solid choice for a grower with at least a little experience. It’s hardy by nature and handles a warm climate particularly well. The main thing to plan for is height, since this strain stretches significantly once flowering begins.

Indoors, some topping or low-stress training early in the vegetative stage helps keep growth manageable. Give it plenty of vertical room, since untrained plants can push well past what a compact hybrid would reach. Outdoors, it rewards a long, sunny season. Left to its own devices, it can grow up to 2 to 3m.

This strain grows tall and can stretch fast. So staking or support structures are worth setting up early, rather than scrambling for them mid-flower. If you want a similarly energising sativa with a shorter, more compact grow, Chocolope Feminised is worth comparing before you decide.

Durban Poison Flowering Time & Yield

Durban Poison Feminised typically finishes flowering in 8 to 9 weeks, or roughly 56 to 63 days. That’s once you switch it to a 12/12 light cycle indoors. Because it’s a genuine landrace sativa, some phenotypes can run a touch longer than a modern hybrid would. Outdoors, harvest generally lands in mid-autumn across most of Australia, later than most indica-leaning hybrids on this site.

Indoors, expect yields of around 400 to 500 g/m² under good conditions. That’s a solid, dependable range for a plant this tall and vigorous. Outdoors, a healthy plant given a full season typically produces around 450g or more, assuming reasonable light and a warm climate.

As always, actual results depend on light, nutrients, container size, climate and how well you manage the grow overall. So treat the figures above as a solid planning benchmark, not a guaranteed outcome.

Who Durban Poison Seeds Suit Best

Durban Poison Feminised suits growers who want a genuinely rare piece of cannabis history without a confusing lineage attached. In particular, it’s well suited to anyone after sharp mental clarity and focus, rather than a heavy body stone. Its distinctive sweet, spicy flavour also suits growers chasing something different. That’s a real change from the usual fuel and berry notes. If you’re after that classic sativa clarity in a slightly more compact package, AK-47 Feminised is worth comparing.

On the other hand, it’s a less natural fit for growers specifically chasing deep, sedating relaxation. That’s simply not what this genetic profile delivers. Anyone wanting a purely heavy, evening-only indica should also look elsewhere, given how energising this strain runs. Skywalker OG Feminised is worth comparing if that’s what you’re after instead. For everyone else after a dependable, genuinely authentic sativa with real pedigree, though, Durban Poison Feminised remains hard to top.

Always have a blast with this strain. The seeds pop open very quickly (within 12-24 hours of being in water) and the plant just shoots to life. Always yields nice results.

Sprouted very quickly, grew into a huge 2 metre plant even quicker. The stretch during flower was intense but nothing a bit of bending, snapping and tying down can’t fix. The buds are some of the biggest and most dense I have grown as well as being completely coated in frost. Highly recommend this strain as it’s very consistent every time I’ve popped a seed!
